? University of Northern Iowa President Nook has announced a $10 million gift to the university at today’s meeting of the Iowa Board of Regents. “David and Karen Takes have always shown strong leadership for UNI,” said Nook. “They have invested their time, talents and treasure in this university. This new gift builds on their passion for the university and will make our campus even stronger going forward.” David Takes is a current member and past chair of the UNI Foundation’s Board of Trustees and a 1981 alumnus of the university.

In March 2020, the UNI Wind Ensemble will embark on a spring break tour to Europe. The group has planned a fall concert performance, with hopes of raising funds for the tour through ticket sales. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14 at the Great Hall in the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center (GBPAC) on the University of Northern Iowa campus. A European themed hors d'oeuvre reception will follow the concert.

In celebration of International Education Week, the International Students and Scholars Office will host “A Taste of Culture.” This event will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 18, in the Central Ballroom, Maucker Union, on the University of Northern Iowa campus. “A Taste of Culture” allows visitors to try food from cultures all around the world. There will be food samples, life performances, door prizes, and international students representing more than 35 countries. The event is open to everyone.

Visual artist Justin Brice Guariglia will visit the University of Northern Iowa for a public talk on Wednesday, Nov. 13. His public talk, “We Are the Asteroid: Art and the Ecological Crisis,” will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 at Lang Hall Auditorium.?

The University of Northern Iowa posted the highest voter turnout of any public university in the state in 2018, validating a concerted effort by faculty and students to increase turnout on campus. UNI’s voter turnout rate was 46.2% in 2018, a 16.5 percentage point increase from 2014 fueled by the #PanthersVote initiative, a nonpartisan, unified effort with the Northern Iowa Student Government (NISG) and University chapters of the American Democracy Project and Campus Election Engagement Project.?

The 2019 Education Summit at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) will feature presentations and conversations centered on “Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and Practice: Challenging Systemic Inequity and Injustice in Education and Health” on Nov. 11 and 12 at the Maucker Union.? The conference focus is a result of a 10-month listening and learning tour conducted by the Center for Educational Transformation (CET) director and staff, which resulted in a list of critical and emerging issues reported by Iowans and observed across the nation.?
